For several millennia<\/a>, wine has accompanied great civilizations and exchanges between peoples. Its history is closely linked to travel, trade, religions<\/a> and population movements. From Europe to Asia, from the Americas to Oceania, viticulture gradually spread around the world<\/strong>, giving rise to new vineyards and new traditions. <\/p>\n\n

Monasteries, guardians of viticultural knowledge<\/h2>\n\n

The spread of wine<\/strong> is closely linked to the expansion of Christian civilization from the first centuries of our era. Abbeys became major vineyard owners and produced their own wine. They welcomed pilgrims, gave alms to the poorest, and preserved the knowledge needed to grow vines and make wine. <\/p>\n\n

Sheltered from the incessant wars that ravaged Europe for centuries, monasteries thus played an essential role in developing viticultural know-how. Monks observed soils, selected plots, improved cultivation methods, and gradually refined winemaking techniques. <\/p>\n\n

Tradition even attributes the birth of Champagne to a monk, Dom Pierre P\u00e9rignon<\/strong>, although this story is partly legend. Cathedrals and churches also owned vineyards. After all, wine holds an essential place in Christian liturgy: it takes a lot of vines to produce altar wine! <\/p>\n\n

From the Silk Road to China<\/h2>\n\n

However, the vine did not spread only westward. From Central Asia<\/strong>, viticulture gradually reached China more than 2,000 years ago. <\/p>\n\n

Travelers\u2019 accounts then attest to the presence of wine in certain regions of China. In the 13th century, Marco Polo reported discovering the consumption of grape wine in several lands during his travels. <\/p>\n\n

Trade played a decisive role in this spread. The Silk Road<\/strong> in particular enabled techniques, grape varieties and agricultural products to circulate between Asia and Europe. Viticulture also reached Japan, although the consumption of grape wine developed there much later, notably through exchanges with Europeans. <\/p>\n\n

The vine crosses the Atlantic<\/h2>\n\n

With the great explorations and European colonization, the vine also crossed the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n

In the United States<\/strong>, the first French settlers helped spread vine cultivation along the East Coast as early as the 16th century. Viticulture then gradually developed westward and found in California<\/strong> a terroir particularly favorable to its expansion. <\/p>\n\n

In South America<\/strong>, European colonizers also played a major role in introducing and developing viticulture. Argentina and Chile gradually became major wine-growing lands, benefiting from climatic and geographical conditions particularly well suited to vine cultivation. <\/p>\n\n

Over the centuries, the vine thus established itself on new continents and adapted to very different terroirs. Each region developed its own grape varieties, cultivation methods and traditions, greatly enriching the diversity of the wine world. <\/p>\n\n

New vineyards in the face of climate change<\/h2>\n\n

Today, the world wine map continues to evolve. Climate change<\/strong> is altering vine-growing conditions and making certain regions that were once too cold now suitable for wine production. <\/p>\n\n

Northern European countries are a striking example. Thanks to longer periods of sunshine during grape ripening, Sweden<\/strong> now produces wine\u2014something that would have seemed unimaginable just a few decades ago. <\/p>\n\n

Great Britain<\/strong> is also experiencing a real wine-growing boom. Its sparkling wines are enjoying growing success today, and some are compared to the great French Champagnes. <\/p>\n\n

It is even whispered that the bubbles produced in Windsor for King Charles III are particularly appreciated\u2026<\/p>\n\n

A story that continues to be written<\/h3>\n\n

From Central Asia to European vineyards, from California to South America, the vine has never stopped traveling and adapting. Even today, new wine regions are emerging and pushing back the traditional boundaries of the wine world. It is often associated with sharing, passing on knowledge, and the great moments in people\u2019s lives. <\/p>\n\n
